One of the admired furniture designs of the 1960s, the Egg Chair is a large red lounge chair noticed for its exceptional rounded form. The chair was the idea of Arne Jacobsen, a Danish architect and a famous advocate of the Danish Modern design association. Jacobsen made the Egg Chairin 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel of the Scandinavian Airlines System (which Jacobsen also developed) in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Egg Chair is essentially split into two distinctive pieces: the upper body that composed the seat and backrest, and the steel support base. The curved body of the Chair is done from a plaster shell resistant with cold synthetic foam. Soon after reproductions of the Egg, but, have interchange the plaster with glass fibre support and polyurethane foam. The body is built-in with a soft red leather shield, and added with the 4-star complex metal base at the base. The base also present a steel and aluminum mechanism which the chair to change itself according to the client’s height.

The Egg Chair was one of two furniture works done by Jacobsen for the SAS Royal Hotel, the other being the Swan Chair. The Swan is related in figure with its Egg counterpart, but has a other pair of armchairs on each part. Also, limited-edition couches were also finished found on the Swan and Egg Chairs, with some consumed in the SAS Royal Hotel as well. Yet, only the Swan type has sustained on to mass production, as the Egg “couch” was complex and very exclusive to create.

The Egg Chair was first created by the Fritz Hansen furniture company of Copenhagen, and keeps on as one of its leading producer. Lately, Fritz Hansen honors the Egg Chair’s 50th anniversary by giving off 50 limited edition Egg Chairs which are now presented in various presentations around the world.
